Dika is 12 years old and his brother Ogi is 5.
They probably have progressive muscular dystrophy (the syndrome is currently being investigated) and it means that they cannot walk and can only move to some extent in a sitting position. They have limited muscular strength, need help and are not fully ADL independent. Dika and Ogi are both being treated by Marieke de Wit. They make a lot of effort during therapy and enjoy joining in the various activities organised there. Both have made attractive paintings which are offered as part of the retail project.
The brothers are lucky in having motivated parents who have a lot of initiative and are actively involved in their children's learning and supervision. This is also shown by their wish to build a small house adapted as far as possible for the abilities of their two children. Currently, they live with the father's parents who have a house with many different levels. The layout is also very poor for the boys, for example, the kamar mandi (washroom and toilet) is at the back of the house at the top of two steps. The only room the family has for their own use only has space for a large bed and is not accessible by wheelchair. The parents do not have much money and so, as well as requesting help in designing an adapted kamar mandi, they have asked APA Foundation to contribute to the building costs. After discussions, a drawing was made for an adapted kamar mandi. Advance arrangements were made with builder Agung. APA Foundation will fund the building work and fitting of the kamar mandi provided the work is in line with the drawing. Until then, the two boys have an aid, a urinal, so that they do not always need to be taken to the toilet.
THE APPLICATION FOR THE ADAPTED WASHROOM WAS OFFICIALLY SUBMITTED IN AUGUST THIS YEAR..
Previously, Dika and Ogi had to share one wheelchair, but now Ogi has received a small wheelchair from APA Foundation. The chair, whose front wheels were damaged during the transport from Netherlands to Indonesia, was repaired and lent to Ogi. The chair was donated to the foundation by Tacko Horn.
UPDATE 2006
Construction costs Rp. 2,900,000/ € 267,–
The new and adapted bathroom in the family's new house was completed early this year. In practice, however, the toilet could not be used as intended. Investigation showed a slight departure from the original plan during construction so that the toilet and modified seat were too high. Changes have now been made and brought in line with the brothers' current abilities.
