Housing modifications

Sukarini has multiple mental and physical handicaps.
She and a group of others visit Stichting High5Rehab where they are stimulated to better development. Although she has been given a wheelchair, she cannot move independently except by shuffling along the ground and so she depends on others for day-to-day personal care. As in many traditionally built (simple) houses, the kamar mandi is in the garden. The house is raised and has a veranda with three steps. In the past, Sukarini was carried to and from the kamar mandi by one of her parents but she is now 12 years old and too heavy for her mother.
In consultation with the parents, APA Foundation has proposed making the kamar mandi accessible by wheelchair from the house.

The modifications were made by her father and a local builder. Sukarini can now be taken to the kamar mandi by wheelchair. She has also received a urinal, a new mattress to sleep on and one to rest on during the day, and facilities for incontinence.
